Dissertationsprojekt: The Role of Yugoslavia in the Liberation Struggle of Zimbabwe

The Role of Yugoslavia in the Liberation Struggle of Zimbabwe

In 1965 white minority settlers in British colony of Southern Rhodesia (modern day Zimbabwe) declared unilateral declaration of independence, creating de facto state ruled by the regime of racial segregation and oppression. Armed insurgency against the unrecognized minority regime was organized and led by the African liberation movements with particularly prominent role of the Zimbabwe African People’s Union (ZAPU) and Zimbabwe African National Union (ZANU). Yugoslavia played prominent political, diplomatic, and social role showing solidarity with the liberation struggle of the oppressed majority. The aim of research is to understand who on Yugoslav side was involved in those efforts, what influenced their actions, and how it all affected the liberation struggle and Yugoslav relations with Zimbabwe and other countries during and after the end of liberation struggle.
